While organizing this year’s athens zinefest (azf), we had the idea of exhibiting zine fests’ posters from all arourn the world. In my opinion, zine fest posters portray the esence of the whole zine culture, while disclose elements of every local zine scene. So, in order to show to people over here the vividness of zine scenes worldwide, we got in contact with lots of zinesters/artists who have done zinefest posters, asking for participation. No need to say that the responses we received were full of enthusiasm!
Images and drawings of zine fests’ posters offer the best visual representation of zine culture. These posters illustrate the way and the materials needed for a zine to be made, the excitement one feels reading these publications, as well as the direct communication that’s taking place between publishers and readers during a zinefest.
The posters are usually made by people who are actively involved in the zine scene. In Chicago f.e. all the artwork for CZF comes from local artists / selfpublishers, while each year in Portland, Zine Symposium organizers set a theme and put out an open call for art submissions.
Either full of color or simply xeroxed, either made with pencils or scissors ‘n’ glue, zinefest posters emerge a diy spirit of creativity and reflect all thoughts and emotions that a photocopied publication carries.
I’d really like to thank all artists for sending their works, as well as zine fest organizers who support this project. Specifically, Marnie, Laura, John and CZF, Apolo, Bunny, Ben, Josh, Douglas (Ugra Press), Jessica, Nina, Leonardo (Leeme), Thomas and Sticky Institute, Louis & Ward, Gemma, Christina and the organizers of Feria Anarquista del Libro y el Fanzine de Medellin.
Below, you can see all displayed posters. For more azf2014 photos and review in greek, here. Cheers!
